Last night Salty Waffle went to a great LinkedIn Seattle meet up, if you were there it was awesome to meet you! Nicole spoke about social media and one of the things many people learned from it was that social can actually help you find a job!
Savvy businesses check out everything you have online and in social media before they hire you or work with your company. A recent study had the following information regarding people and their Facebook usage. According to that study, 42% of women aged 18 to 34 think it’s fine to post pictures of themselves in a state of “visible intoxication” while 63% use Facebook for networking and their careers.
While something certainly doesn’t add up there, take special note of the 63% figure. Its an extremely high number using Facebook as a place to host their personal and professional lives. Professional…right alongside those drunken photos, hmm.
While we are definitely proponents of marrying the personal and professional in social media, there are some things you just can’t do and what goes online is there forever.
If you put a little time into making sure you know what you have, when the time comes to find a new job, you know you have nothing to worry about. In fact, if you’re happy with the way your social networks represents you, they can be a real plus with potential employers.
Being a part of a generation that doesn’t mind having personal information online, I enjoy the opportunity to show potential employers, professionals, and others a more in-depth look at my personality through my online presence.
You have the opportunity to share your life and accomplishments in an awesome way with social media, but always be smart and always be real. Be proud and share it!
